Ariba Inc. released the latest version of its e-procurement product, Ariba Buyer 7.0, the first major upgrade of the product in almost a year. Ariba Buyer 7.0 represents a needed upgrade for Ariba, delivering a wide variety of functional features and some technical enhancements. Functional improvements include currency conversion, line-item split accounting, and improved receiving functionality such as asset tracking and quality inspection. Also included is support for eight languages, including mixed language-support for a multi-instance implementation. The catalog search feature and reporting tools have been enhanced, and APIs have been increased to support the large number of application partnerships Ariba has recently developed. Although the package still does not support more advanced features, such as return-to-vendor processing, which many users were accustomed to using in leading ERP packages, it still tends to score the highest when running in a highly heterogeneous back-office environment. Also, functional requirements for several of the implementations to-date, have not been very complex, since the processes are simplified and decoupled from the back-office systems.
