Remote Access VPNs: Not Just for Road Warriors

Analyst(s): Michael Disabato

Remote access security is generally handled by either Internet Protocol security (IPsec) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) virtual private networks (VPNs). Although IPsec has been commonly used in the past, SSL VPN deployments have reached new popularity with the growing number of web services applications. SSL appliances can also be used to enable security with some non-web applications (e.g., client/server, e-mail, and File Transfer Protocol [FTP]). In this report, Service Director Michael Disabato examines the current state of the SSL VPN market and how this type of VPN is used to secure remote access to enterprise computing resources.
