Microsoft released Windows Identity Foundation (WIF) in 2009 and has just released Forefront Identity Manager (which updates Identity Lifecycle Manager [ILM] 2007) and Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) 2.0. Forefront Unified Access Gateway was released in December, 2009. Together, these products represent a major restructuring of the architecture of identity--not just in Microsoft environments, but in federated environments too. In this assessment, Identity and Privacy Strategies Research Director Bob Blakley examines the significance of Microsoft's new identity offerings and details their strengths and weaknesses.
