Too often, retention programs are force fitted back to the needs of workforce members. This approach of throwing together an unbalanced collection of cookie-cutter retention techniques usually delivers a poor return on investment. The right retention package is one that integrates differences in needs of the people with their skills contribution and life stage. In this report, a starting point for building a retention package is presented that looks a what psychologist Abraham Maslow called extrinsic and intrinsic satisfiers. Next, for today's increasingly complex and demographically diverse workforce, the report explores in-depth program design that uses performance, rewards potential and demographic analysis to encourage self selection of benefits and instrinsic satisfaction.
