Impacts and Recommendations

  • Endorsement by the enterprise Java leaders will increase mainstream adoption of PaaS
    • Endorsement of PaaS by enterprise megavendors will signal to enterprise IT leaders that PaaS has long-term viability and will lead to increasing adoption of PaaS in mainstream IT organizations. The combined powerful marketing push of these vendors will contribute to educating the market about the concept and benefits of PaaS, and will move this type of cloud service onto the radar screen of most enterprise IT organizations.
  • Initial enterprise Java leaders' PaaS offerings, lacking functional breadth, will fail to consolidate the fragmented PaaS market
  • The choice by the enterprise Java leaders to focus on migrations and reuse the established platforms and programming models will accelerate some adoption of PaaS, but will limit use patterns and scope of adoption
  • Amazon Web Services (now the platform of choice for migrating enterprise applications off-premises) will be the first competitive target for the new enterprise Java leaders' PaaS, while the current PaaS leaders will remain largely unchallenged
