Massive open online courses allow anyone anywhere to take a class or course online for free. MOOCs present the opportunity for education CIOs and IT leaders to re-examine their institutions' position on content, course delivery and the total cost of an education.

  • MOOCs provide open content, which means that educational CIOs and IT leaders must focus on how content is developed and delivered within an "information should be free" community
  • Because new platforms are being created for MOOCs, institutions must ensure that learning-platform providers demonstrate an ability to support MOOC platforms
  • Current MOOCs are not expressly intended to provide academic credit, so colleges and universities must devise, test and evaluate methods to award traditional academic credit for a student's successful performance in a MOOC
