Impacts and Recommendations

  • City infrastructure, from bridges and street lights to sensors in the water pipes, has varied life cycles that may be decades long. City department planners must update their plans to allow for the fact that IoT endpoints have different life cycles than regular physical infrastructure.
  • The long life cycle of the IoT endpoint elements will expose them to evolving security risks, especially at the interfaces between systems. City planners must plan for security changes.
  • IoT deployments will require increasing amounts of wireless bandwidth. City department CIOs and CTOs will have to plan for bandwidth consumption from growing numbers of IoT and M2M systems to meet regulations and capacity requirements.
