Summary

Dropbox has released an improved management console and more sharing controls for its Dropbox for Business (formerly Dropbox for Teams) product aimed at small business and team use. While an improvement, these moves will not be sufficient for most enterprise workplace planners to approve use of the service.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • Dropbox's enhancements to its enterprise capabilities will make the service more acceptable to some enterprises, but not most
  • The rising popularity of personal cloud and BYOD initiatives are pushing enterprises to accept individual and consumer-oriented services for enterprise use in some form
  • Dropbox is unlikely to turn itself into an enterprise vendor in the next two years at least; rather it aims to become increasingly acceptable to enterprises as a consumer-oriented service
