While the term "appliance" has been used in the storage industry for some time, in the past five years, storage appliances have broadened their capability and are more pervasively deployed. Appliances now represent a packaging and delivery option that storage managers must evaluate.

  • Storage appliances may transcend and disrupt existing silos within IT organizations, requiring cross-silo training and collaboration between the storage system, backup, server and application teams
  • Due to the amount of data that can be stored in an appliance and the changes in procedures, migration away from an appliance will be harder than migrating to one
  • Storage buyers are increasingly willing to consider paying a premium for the integration and rapid deployment that appliances can offer
