Semiconductor vendors and TV and display panel manufacturers should meet this evolutionary challenge with advanced technology, design and build solutions.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • The very thin nature of OLED TV displays means that the internal electronics need to reside outside of the display, either built into the stand or in a separate stand-alone box. This has implications for the future role of displays and set-top boxes (STBs) in the home
  • The possibility of using flexible substrates opens up the potential to build OLED TVs in a variety of different forms, such as curved or rollable screens
  • The manufacturing process for OLED TV panels has fewer process steps than LCD panels, offering reduced manufacturing costs when yields eventually improve and high volume production levels are reached
