Impacts and Recommendations

  • The early success of consumer wearables seen in the U.S. health and fitness sector is driving vendors to quickly expand into other regions, which could put technology and service providers not investing in this area at a disadvantage in the next 12 months
  • The high level of maturity in the smartphone market is driving Tier 1 vendors to focus on market fundamentals. Addressing consumer needs instead of fueling a tech race by bringing innovation to the most frequent use cases could help to improve brand loyalty and safeguard margins.
  • High growth in the sub-$150 Android phone segment has pushed Nokia to release an Android smartphone, further fragmenting the Android ecosystem, and adding to Google's woes as it is "shut out" of its own platform
