Security teams are strained by reacting to new, advanced threats, while endless, often piecemeal, technology countermeasures are unsustainable, and security spending bloats. CISOs must monitor threats before they peak, and adjust threat management before threats decline.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • Threats are an external variable for which the frequency and intended target cannot be controlled by CISOs, so they focus on keeping pace and responding immediately to threats
  • Some threats will peak before others, so CISOs assigning increased security spending equally to all threats will diminish effectiveness and can invoke unnecessary battles with IT
  • New and impactful threats often drive the adoption of costly point solutions, causing CISOs to add more duties to overburdened staff
  • The threat portion of risk assessments often remains static or is reviewed only for threat increases by CISOs, so threat decline is often overlooked
