Impacts and Recommendations

  • HVD solutions using direct (pass-through) GPU present IT leaders with a viable CAD/CAM workstation replacement and are a good starting point in deploying GPU-powered virtual desktops
  • IT leaders' adoption of GPU shared models will be limited until standards emerge that deliver the right performance levels and support necessary graphics APIs
    • Session Shared GPU
    • Hypervisor Shared GPU
    • Emulated/Pass-Through Shared GPU
  • Low user density and high infrastructure costs make GPU-accelerated desktops too expensive for IT leaders to justify for most mainstream use cases in the short to medium term
