Impacts and Recommendations

  • Despite lower device acquisition costs, subsidies and infrastructure and support costs regularly end up making BYOD more costly for I&O leaders than traditional corporate-owned programs
  • I&O leaders are facing additional challenges associated with BYOD for PCs versus BYOD for smartphones and tablets, which will throttle widespread adoption of BYOPC
  • I&O leaders making BYOD mandatory, as opposed to opt-in, often see increased user resistance and conflict with certain employment laws in some geographies
  • Employee culture factors and organizational financial health will play a major role in BYOD acceptance for I&O leaders
  • I&O leaders in regulated industries often find that the devices that meet compliance requirements do not match up with end-user device preferences, limiting end-user participation
