Impacts and Recommendations

  • While software SaaS has matured into enterprise-level solutions beyond HR and CRM, the need to differentiate in a competitive global market drives the separation of the application platform from the application logic, which generates completely new services models for providers and buyers
  • Expansion in the PaaS market is ongoing and service providers are actively investing in PaaS capabilities, which will fuel market pressure on end-user organizations to acquire or migrate to PaaS-based solutions to support their business functionality, leading to an increased level of lock-in to particular providers as solutions cover infrastructure and application layers
  • Customization will become a main differentiator for PaaS implementations with buyers able to build applications or apps in native PaaS scripting languages such as's Apex. This ability delivers more granular, business-specific functionality, yet tightens the lock-in, even when platforms allow for wider integration with other platforms.
