HP Names Lucent Executive as President and CEO

On July 19, 1999, Hewlett-Packard ended its search to replace outgoing CEO, Lewis Platt, by announcing the appointment of Carleton "Carly" S. Fiorina as the company's new president and CEO. Ms. Fiorina is the former president of Lucent Technologies' more than $20 billion Global Service Provider business, and is credited with engineering that vendor's $3 billion spin-off from AT&T. Mr. Platt, who is expected to stay on with HP until the end of this year, will work with Ms. Fiorina during the coming months to ensure a seamless transfer of power, and to finalize the separation of HP's measurement business from its computing and imaging business.
