American wireless operator Nextel announced last week an initial agreement with Japanese mobile phone manufacturer Kyocera for the purchase and sale of Kyocera-manufactured iDEN handsets beginning during calendar year 2000. The concord opens the door for Kyocera to expand its handset business into the Americas as iDEN becomes a more established technology across the region. Already, iDEN networks have been commercialized in the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, and subscriber growth continues to develop at a level commensurate with Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) in the Americas.
