With consolidation on the horizon, vendors must expand their ecosystems and become established with enterprise IT in order to survive and grow.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • NoSQL DBMSs have distinct advantages over RDBMS for many emerging enterprise application and data management needs, including dynamic, flexible schemas, high scalability and availability, and eventual consistency, but enterprise IT shops remain largely unaware or doubtful of these advantages
  • Growth rates for NoSQL DBMS will exceed RDBMS through the next three to five years, causing DBMS vendors to invest heavily in NoSQL product development and marketing, diluting the meaning of the NoSQL term and leading to its probable abandonment
  • RDBMS vendors are actively moving to co-opt the space and consolidate the market, closing the window of market opportunity, and these activities demand a swift, comprehensive strategic response by product managers and marketers
