The dogged pursuit of automation early in IGA projects can cause high IAM program risk, while providing little incremental value. IAM leaders should adopt a governance-oriented deployment approach to deliver high value quickly and minimize overall project risk to build momentum for their programs.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • End-to-end automation is expensive and riddled with integration challenges. IAM leaders who put too much emphasis on automated provisioning early in IGA deployments run the risk of front-loading the majority of project risk.
  • IAM leaders who defer to technologists for initial IGA deployment planning may be elevating the priorities of technologists over business stakeholders and allowing automated fulfillment to trump business and program goals.
