Summary

Security governance in midsize organizations remains largely the domain of technologists, and often is not seen as a matter for senior management attention. Security is nevertheless regarded as a priority and midsize organizations are willing to invest in it. However, they face some challenges.

  • More than half of midsize organizations have no formal capacity to assess their IT-related risk, and the vast majority do not understand the extent to which an adverse IT event would affect their business.
  • The security role has access to senior levels in about half of midsize organizations. However, one in three organizations do not see it as a matter for senior-level interest.
  • Security governance is confined to management of technical security by security technologists, perpetuating the traditional disconnect between security management and business relevance.
  • Security is nevertheless seen as an important challenge, and midsize organizations are prepared to invest in technology to improve their security posture. However, delivery may be challenging due to capability constraints.
  • Midsize organizations are significantly less likely to train their users in prudent security practices.
