Summary

CFOs understand the positive impact digital technology can have on enterprise margins and growth, but do not consider CIOs as the go-to people to build long-term strategic plans with. CIOs should address this issue or face being frozen out prior to the greatest era of technology investment.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • CFOs' priorities have shifted from cost management (down 15% year over year) to technology-related investments (up 9% year over year), suggesting that this may be the right time for CIOs to put forward an increase in the IT budget as long as it's related to helping improve business outcomes
  • Only 16% of CFOs consider CIOs as one of their top three leaders they would work with for long-term strategic business planning, suggesting CIOs should place a strong emphasis on building their leadership skills and business knowledge, and not simply focus on technical expertise
  • CFOs have a significantly lower view of IT's ability to meet upcoming challenges than CEOs, suggesting that CIOs have not done enough to demonstrate the impact of IT investments on accounting and business metrics
