Management Summary The Greensboro-Winston-Salem-Highpoint area (referred to as the Triad region) is located in the north central part of North Carolina, approximately 80 to 90 miles from Raleigh (southeast) and Charlotte (southwest). Once lagging the Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte markets in managed care market penetration, the Triad now has 79 percent of its population enrolled in managed care plans, 41 percent in HMO and HMO point of service (POS) plans and 38 percent in preferred provider organization (PPO) and non-HMO POS plans. The area's well established and financially strong integrated delivery systems (IDSs) and managed care organizations (MCOs) have made it difficult for new healthcare organizations (HCOs) to make inroads. Novant Health Triad Region, comprising four area hospitals (1,130 beds) and the Triad's largest HMO, Partners National Health Plans, is Winston-Salem's leading IDS with close to 30 percent of the area's hospital discharges. Winston-Salem-based Wake Forest University (WFU) Baptist Medical Center, an IDS comprising three area hospitals (915 beds), is a strong competitor with 19 percent inpatient market share. WFU Baptist Medical Center offers a full range of healthcare services and includes a medical school, physician clinics and QualChoice HMO, the area's third-largest HMO. The Triad's third IDS, Moses Cone Health System, is the dominant provider in Greensboro with two acute-care hospitals (1,024 beds) and 26 percent share of Triad area discharges. High Point Regional Hospital, an independent facility contracting with all area MCOs, is the only inpatient provider in High Point. Little capitation of physicians exists in the Triad; most contracting remains on a discounted fee-for-service basis. A few large groups exist in the Triad (more than 50 physicians) organized as single specialty and multispecialty physician group practices, independent physician associations (IPAs) and physician-hospital organizations (PHOs).
