The DBMS Licensing Battle Between SAP and Oracle Is Forcing Customers to Pay More and Accelerate Licensing Decisions

SAP customers licensing Oracle runtime DBMS licenses face a 27% increase in their runtime costs for new licenses after 1 April 2015, as well as a likely premature and accelerated deadline for evaluating the license costs and contract risks associated with migrating to SAP S/4HANA.

  • By 31 December 2017, SAP customers will have no guarantee that they will still be able to purchase new Oracle runtime DBMS licenses from SAP, and will need to have analyzed and identified alternative ways to license DBMS options
  • Oracle will target the estimated 15% to 20% of SAP Business Suite users, who are Oracle runtime customers, and propose an alternative Oracle solution priced lower than 19% of SAP Application Value; however, Gartner does not anticipate this to reduce long-term DBMS costs for most customers
