Summary

Modernization decisions are a combination of AD issues and data center operational and reliability concerns. CIOs and data center managers shouldn't underestimate these relationships, which can reduce cost, improve reliability and resiliency, standardize platforms and simplify the environment.

Table Of Contents

Analysis

  • New AD paradigms and runtimes, often dramatically different than existing environments, impact operational decisions and processes in the data center.
  • Skills require an investment in training and new, operations-centric software.
  • AD decisions that imply scale-out deployment can increase complexities and may conflict with initiatives in the data center, driving up operational costs.
  • Virtualization and consolidation are not a panacea for all ills. Software vendors often balk at supporting these environments, and AD teams often resist as well. The AD team may have an incentive to "stay put" at a time when the operations team has an incentive to virtualize and consolidate.
