Broadband is lighting up the world as it emerges as the platform of choice for delivering next-generation, converged voice, video and data services. As cable network operators proceed with their massive HFC infrastructure upgrades, CMTS -- the communications equipment that enables high-speed Internet access over cable networks -- is high on their purchase lists. During the first half of 1999, cable network operators spent more than $127 million for CMTS equipment, and Dataquest forecasts that for all of 1999, expenditure o cable data communications headend gear will reach almost $360 million. This Perspective examines the CMTS market during the first half of 1999 and provides an overview of key vendors and technologies that are taking this segment of the broadband access equipment market by storm.
