Broadband is lighting up the world as it emerges as the platform of choice for delivering next-generation, converged voice, video and data services. As cable network operators proceed with their massive HFC infrastructure upgrades, CMTS -- the communications equipment that enables high-speed Internet access over cable networks -- is high on their purchase lists. During the first half of 1999, cable network operators spent more than $127 million for CMTS equipment, and Dataquest forecasts that for all of 1999, expenditure o cable data communications headend gear will reach almost $360 million.
