The growing LAN semiconductor market continues to draw interest from technology innovators and the venture capital community. Innovations are continuing to occur in established areas, such as 10/100 PHY silicon, as well as in newer applications, such as gigabit switching. This Research Brief provides a review of three hot areas in LAN ICs: gigabit switching, gigabit PHY cores and 10/100 PHYs, switches and repeaters. Through the use of three company case studies -- SwitchCore, Masana and Kendin -- three market entry strategies are evaluated.
