A CD-ROM drive is a standard feature of practically every PC shipped today. CD-ROM drive market shares shifted dramatically in 1999 as companies in Taiwan and Korea vied for, and captured, significantly higher market share percentages over 1998. Although DVD-ROM drives shipped in higher quantities in 1999, the DVD-ROM market still fell short of the optimistic expectations held by the manufacturers in the early stages of its introduction. In this Perspective, Dataquest presents its findings and provides an analysis of the market shares for CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives in 1999.
