Sun's Java Development Kit (JDK) provides the underlying technologies for implementing the Java programming language. As such, it is the foundation for all of the development tools and applications offered by both Sun and third-party vendors. Where version 1.2 focused on enterprise development, JDK 1.3-- also known as the Java 2 Platform Version 1.3 and the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition-- updates client-side performance and features. It now offers the HotSpot JVM for clients, applet caching on local drives to reduce network traffic and improve performance, automated application and applet testing, a much smaller footprint, and LDAP directory connectivity. The JDK 1.3 package includes the J2SE classes and tools and the Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition.
