Reliant Unix is Fujitsu Siemens' 64-bit operating system for its line of MIPS-based RM servers. The standards-based Reliant Unix is typically used for business-critical online transaction processing (OLTP) applications that require high-transaction rates, superior I/O connectivity, and high availability. In spite of its many strengths, the operating system is nearing the end of its life cycle. Fujitsu Siemens, a highly popular European vendor, said that it would continue to enhance Reliant Unix through 2002, and support it through 2008. But the company has made it clear that it is basing its Unix business on its Sun SPARC-compatible line of PrimePower servers and the Solaris operating system.
