Analyst(s): Carol L. Simmons, Robert Payne

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the organization-to-organization exchange of data in a standard, computer-readable format. The term Electronic Commerce (EC) includes EDI and related methods plus exchanges of data between the consumer and an organization. The telecommunications medium for EDI has historically been a value-added-network (VAN). At present the Internet, in particular the World Wide Web, is becoming a viable alternative.
