The AlphaServer DS20 and DS20E are Compaq's primary offerings in the Unix workgroup server space. The two models share the same electronics, but have different form factors: the DS20 is a traditional deskside server; the DS20E is a minitower that can be used horizontally as a 5U-high rack-mount server. Both support up to two Compaq Alpha 21264 RISC processors, making them among the most powerful workgroup servers available. The primary operating system is Tru64 Unix, but "OS-less" Linux-ready configurations are also available, as well as OpenVMS and Windows NT 4.0 (for the installed base only). They are powerful, fast, and competitively priced (for Unix), but what chance do they have outside the installed base?
