The Unified Modeling Language, or UML, is a sleeping giant with significant potential to ease application development, maintenance, and even integration in today's Web-enabled, composite software world. UML, which provides a standard set of graphical and descriptive artifacts, works with any design methodology and any technology--including scripting languages and XML--to aid collaborative development.
