While Windows/IIS and Netscape/iPlanet Enterprise Server have taken command of the commercial Web server market, open-source Apache has quietly maintained and grown its presence as a widely used server. Often paired with Linux, Apache is gaining new attention as IBM and several other vendors endorse the open-source development model and incorporate Apache in their product lines. Apache and associated development projects of the Apache Software Foundation are now being released in new versions that benefit from the material contributions of these vendors. Apache v2.0 (due in 2000) includes improvements to its Windows port and multithreading support for Unix aided by IBM.
