Analyst(s): Martina Kurth

Investments in SDN and NFV by CSPs aim to reduce network complexity, increase levels of service flexibility and reduce operational costs through virtualized and software-driven infrastructures. CTOs and CIOs in CSPs must take action now to modernize their OSSs.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • The arrival of NFV and SDN will be disruptive to CSPs' existing OSS architectures, potentially requiring an upgrade or a new generation of OSS; multiple dependencies to manage physical and virtual infrastructures require close interaction with software functionality in order to drive automated service delivery across the infrastructure.
  • CSPs will adopt SDN and NFV incrementally and will migrate to horizontal domain-agnostic operations for architectural openness and to drive down opex
  • OSS in SDN/NFV will require investments in a new end-to-end orchestration architecture with distinct operational functionality residing in each of the network, service and customer orchestration layers
    • Implications on Key OSS Functionality to Support SDN/NFV
  • To succeed with SDN and NFV, CSPs will focus on organizational alignment of network and IT architecture skills and organizational alignments toward DevOps, which will have implications on the roles, responsibilities and skills setup of CSPs
