When Should I&O Leaders Opt for Agent-Based and Agentless Monitoring?

Published: 31 August 2015

Analyst(s): Pankaj Prasad

I&O leaders need not focus on exclusive agentless or agent-based technology, and should take architecture, data granularity and level of automation into account when planning their approach. This research discusses both monitoring approaches and when they are best suited for deployment.

Table Of Contents
  • Key Challenges

  • Document Business-Critical IT Infrastructure Components, Depth of Information Needed and Their Security Requirements
  • Deploy Agent-Based Technology for In-Depth Monitoring
    • Document the granularity of data available through APIs as well as through the protocols used by the monitoring server for all business and mission-critical systems
    • Consider the requirement of allowing remote access over the network for collecting data. In some cases, internal policies restrict the opening of ports and certain protocols for sensitive systems
    • Look at the resilience of network to ensure uninterrupted collection of performance metrics from these servers
  • Select an Agentless Approach for Saving Cost and Efficiency
    • Identify simple IT infrastructure architecture that is not segregated across multiple networks
    • Simple collector servers can be deployed across segregated IT infrastructure environments to aggregate agentless data and send in a secure manner to the monitoring server
    • Identify systems that are not mission-critical and where coarse performance related data is sufficient
  • Use a Hybrid Strategy to Manage Mission-Critical and Development or Test Systems
