Extensive customization and use of tightly coupled add-ons in Microsoft SharePoint on-premises can inhibit migration to Office 365 or any other platform. By eradicating interdependent parts through loose coupling, SharePoint leaders can improve agility and pave a smoother path forward.

Impacts and Recommendations

  • Microsoft's fervent focus on Office 365 means that SharePoint leaders must prepare to either exit completely from existing on-premises deployments or adopt a hybrid approach, which for most organizations will start with long-overdue content housekeeping
  • Loosely coupling SharePoint will ease future migration and improve interoperability, but requires its leaders to eliminate customization and uncouple tightly bound third-party add-ons
  • Migrating to Office 365 will require SharePoint leaders to gear their existing custom applications up for a hybrid Microsoft cloud environment, which will likely prove more costly than a pure cloud approach
