Sony Benefits From Acquisition of Toshiba's CMOS Image Sensor Business

Toshiba's impending sale to Sony of its CMOS image sensor business, which includes a 300 mm wafer production line at the Oita fab, will allow Sony to strengthen its image sensor business by acquiring production capacity as well as Toshiba's customers.

  • Sony can expand CIS production capacity quickly, and be ready for increasing demand from dual-camera smartphones, wearable devices, surveillance cameras and automotive applications
  • Sony will get 44% market share in the CIS market (based on 2014 market share); since it also invested to expand capacity in 2015, Sony will further consolidate its No. 1 position
  • Sony will gain a better position in the automotive market by acquiring Toshiba's customers, although Sony will still rank behind competitors in the ADAS market, On Semiconductor and OmniVision Technologies
