Summary

Gartner Dataquest defines the service provider edge market. It differentiates core router products from products that reside on the service provider edge. There is a trend toward core routers moving toward the edge as the core requirements change and faster core routers are deployed. The edge products as a result have taken over the more complex tasks of deploying value-added IP services and have consolidated functionality of broadband aggregation, leased-line aggregation, subscriber management, and advanced routing tasks. To support these new services, correspondingly higher-speed and higher-capacity core products are required. Gartner Dataquest examines the positioning of the vendors in the edge broken down by the subcategories in which they compete.
