Management Summary Economic uncertainty lingers for many IT and business managers. Results from the Gartner 2001 IT Spending and Staffing Survey show that IT managers are bullish about future budget levels; however, the rate of increase will be less than in previous years. Despite gloomy economic forecasts, enterprises continue to spend vigorously on IT, and more than half -- 56 percent -- plan to spend more on IT in 2001 than they did in 2000. Other healthy signs are that 63 percent of respondents show increasing revenue, and only 21 percent of respondents plan to decrease IT budgets in 2001. These findings corroborate Gartner's research opinion that the worst of the economic uncertainty is behind us and that IT managers are focused on the long term. It is unclear what the long-term effects of the recent terrorist attacks in the United States will be on IT spending. However, it will certainly focus IT managers and business leaders on business continuance, risk management and disaster recovery. Most enterprises have underinvested in these areas and will be forced to funnel at least part of their IT budgets in the coming year into enhancing these areas.
