Choosing Between Cloud SaaS and CASB Encryption Is Problematic

A growing number of SaaS applications offer native data encryption with customer-controlled key management, but they are incompatible with each other and SaaS vendors have programmatic access to data and keys. Using external CASB encryption provides confidentiality but loses SaaS functionality.

  • Emerging native SaaS encryption solutions are incompatible with each other and do not yet integrate with CASB encryption solutions, forcing CISOs to resolve the need for a key management solution for each cloud instance, which increases operational complexity, security and cost
  • CASB encryption solutions simplify SaaS security by providing encryption and key management across multiple SaaS, but CISOs are required to balance the resulting loss of SaaS functionality or loss in encryption strength
