Examining the PKI Hype Cycle

Virtually all "new" technologies go through an observable hype cycle. Public key infrastructure (PKI) technologies and services are no exception. PKI is past the "Peak of Inflated Expectations" and well into the "Trough of Disillusionment." Currently, user organizations are facing the complexities and hidden issues of PKI on the slippery "Slope of Enlightenment." The next stage is the "Plateau of Productivity," when PKI disappears into applications to provide productivity without calling attention to itself. But to get there, the unresolved issues that user organizations face must be resolved, and the focus on PKI will diffuse as vendors become less technology-specific, recasting themselves as broader providers of e-business security solutions.
