Impacts and Recommendations

  • Most enterprise IoT projects driven from outside of IT often fail to identify and remediate the IoT implementation's impact on network elements, creating headaches for networking leaders
  • Cloud-centric IoT implementations have particularly sensitive network performance and latency requirements in data-heavy usage scenarios, requiring I&O leaders to adjust WAN infrastructure
  • Thing- and gateway-centric IoT implementations heavily impact LAN or WAN, requiring I&O leaders to resolve peer-to-peer communication challenges, minimize latency and ensure the availability of sufficient end-to-end bandwidth
  • Mobile smart-device-centric IoT architectures require I&O leaders to select providers that can meet cellular network availability and performance minimums that current mobile cellular endpoints may not demand
