Many EA leaders develop or curate documented reference architectures (RAs) that outline design guidance and specifications, which typically consist of principles, standards, patterns, and reference models. However, as organizations work to scale up use of Agile development and delivery methods, many organizations discover that documented RAs have a tendency to become shelfware. As one EA leader put it, “In an engineering- or development-oriented environment, publishing slides to a pattern is a shortcut to irrelevance.”
