Analyst(s): Consult the Board Research Team

This summary contains input from twenty-four members regarding their approaches for hosting applications in China. The original request specifically focused on the measures members are taking in light of the Cybersecurity Law enacted by the Chinese government in November 2016 and which took effect in June 2017. We begin this summary with an overview of members’ existing presence in China, including their current enterprise application system landscape and their status as critical information infrastructure (CII) providers. We then analyze members’ approaches to hosting applications inside versus outside China, as well as their decisions about whether or not to host ERP systems within China. We follow by examining how members support IT environments for operations in China, focusing specifically on whether the IT team supporting the environment is located inside or outside of China. We close this summary with a look at the recommendations and advice members share for hosting data and/or applications in China and the potential impact of new Chinese regulations and data privacy rules on one’s company/industry/region.
