Given the repetitive nature of Legal’s work and the wide variety of legal matters that they cover Legal departments use a wide variety of outside counsel firms. The first place to look for efficiencies is examining the type of work being performed by these vendors. To identify opportunities to apply sourcing techniques look for easily segmented work based on commonalities across the case load. For example, an auto manufacturer might have 20,000 cases a year, a third of these being warranty claims. The similar nature of the work and low complexity of these cases makes them easily outsourced to outside counsel.
