Organizations face a hybrid future, with 75% of hybrid or remote knowledge workers saying their expectations for working flexibly have increased. In the hybrid environment, teams will have access to multiple modes of working, and organizations must invest equally in each of these modes and define their purpose in order to drive innovation. The hybrid environment presents four modes of collaboration — working together together, working together apart, working alone together, and working alone apart — and each plays a role in achieving high performance. Most organizations are investing in synchronous modes based on the assumption that these are more important than asynchronous, but our data shows that asynchronous modes are just as important to achieving innovation. HR leaders at progressive organizations are improving the quality of all four modes and empowering teams to decide how to leverage each and when by collaborating more intentionally.
