Organizations see SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive as natural replacements for their on-premises file shares. However, they are not always the best option. Technical professionals must assess the use cases for the files they need to migrate and select the most appropriate cloud service.

Microsoft 365 is unlikely to support all the organization’s file storage needs. It is well suited to productivity and collaboration use cases but less able to support scenarios involving large datasets, nonstandard file types or application-focused file shares.
OneDrive is an effective replacement for user home directories, but departmental file share migrations to SharePoint are more complicated. Lift and shift migrations that do not consider the different types of files, or how users consume them, will fail.
