This Consult the Board survey summary contains inputs from 24 Gartner Research Board for Global CIOs members regarding various aspects of their IT security organization, such as structure, staffing, and maturity. It also lists members’ recommendations for building sustainable security practices.
What does an effective security organization look like in members’ organizations?
At 70% of the respondents’ organizations (16 of 23), the IT security organization is a centralized function with centralized governance, standard tools and processes, and resources reporting to a common center.
On average, 50% of the IT security full-time equivalent (FTE) employees have first line responsibilities at 22 respondents’ organizations.
The maturity of most respondents’ IT security organization (14 of 23, or 61%) lies at level 3 (defined level), where processes are well-defined and standardized.
For building sustainable security practices, four respondents each (of 11) recommend establishing in-house security
