This Consult the Board survey summary features inputs from 26 Gartner Research Board for Global CIOs members regarding the structure and strategy of their program management office (PMO). It examines the objectives, resources, capabilities, and future vision of the PMO function.
Do members have program management offices (PMOs)? What do organizations value most about the capabilities that PMOs deliver?
Most respondents’ organizations (21 of 26, or 81%) have a PMO or a similar function to manage groups of related projects in a coordinated manner.
More than half of the respondents’ PMOs (12 of 21, or 57%) manage nearly all IT projects that are rolled up into initiatives.
The most valuable capability that PMOs deliver to the business is transparency to all stakeholders on the initiative’s progress, risks, and potential opportunities (10 of 20, or 50%).
