Sustainability is not a core skill for executive leaders today, but they are expected to contribute to enterprise sustainability goals.
All executive leaders should familiarize themselves with some basic sustainability topics to be effective in progressing organizational sustainability initiatives. These basics are materiality assessments, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, public sustainability commitments, climate mitigation and adaptation, the circular economy, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting.
Sustainability is an extremely broad field, and a single function can’t do it alone. A team is required to lead sustainability strategy, and executive leaders can play a role in providing support for sustainable outcomes.
